"Strange object comes from the Latin word extraneus, meaning foreign or external. Many of us often consider our most intimate sexual desires as strange, regardless of how many people share similar desires. We can protect our desires from lovers and friends. In fact, one of the main questions asked in sex therapy is 'Am I normal?' This question itself illustrates a deep vulnerability at the core of desire. And for a good reason, many of us have suffered judgment and persecution on how and with whom we have sex. The need to be accepted can push us to obscure ourselves, but by doing so, we suffer from an unfulfilled desire to be seen. In general, extreme compression and secrecy under which we became autonomous sexual beings has deprived us of a descriptive vocabulary as well as a glimpse of the symbolic nature of our fantasies and desires. Really, most of our fantasies are perspectives on our emotional needs, and not real-life scenarios that require enactment. There exists a spectrum of pragmatism and risk calculation that we are capable to enforce to act according to our desires - but only if we discharge them from under the cover of shame. When we have less fear of revealing ourselves, we appreciate deeper connections and increased satisfaction. We make more significant choices for ourselves and with others. It may be useful to remind ourselves that every desire arises from innocent childhood - our literal childhoods - and is the vital force that impregnates every possible living being. When we bring consciousness into the hidden realms within us, nothing is verifiable strange. Rather than questioning the normality of what animates our bodies, a more appropriate question could be: who am I a stranger to?"
